Event: Brown Dog
TOURNAMENT FORMAT: Computer generated 4-man teams (A-B-C-D). On each hole, all 4 players tee off and then decide who will play the individual format while the other 3 players will play a scramble.
SCRAMBLE FORMAT: Play the ball chosen as it lies, and then place the other 2 balls no nearer the hole up to one club length through the green in the same condition, e.g., fairway, rough, penalty area. In a sand bunker, the player’s ball chosen is played as it lies first, and the other 2 players recreate the lie, i.e., rake the sand, place your ball, and play from that spot. On the putting green, mark the ball within 6” and play from the exact spot. Repeat until the ball is holed. Record the scramble gross score.
INDIVIDUAL FORMAT: This golfer plays his ball as it lies under the Rules of Golf (with his full course handicap in effect). Repeat until the ball is holed. Record the individual’s gross score.
NOTE: Each player must play the individual format at least 2 times on each nine holes (front nine and back nine).
Scoring: Official scoring will be done using the Golf Genius scoring app. Record the gross scramble score on the line without a player’s name. Record the individual gross score on the line with the player’s name to account for who played the individual format on the hole. The app will calculate applicable handicap strokes. The combination of the individual’s net score and the team’s gross scramble score for the hole will be totaled to equal the team score for each hole.

History of the Brown Dog: The MGA adopted this tournament format back in 1992 when current OCC member/past MGA president Rick Brown (shown in the photograph) was a tournament director. He had played this format previously at a company (IBM) outing and suggested the MGA use this combination of a different 3-man scramble and solo player on each hole… and here we are 30 years later! Rick’s nickname at the time was “Brown Dog”, as he had a brown Labrador/Spaniel mix dog as a pet that everybody loved. Several years after Rick had rotated off the MGA Board of Directors, this tournament was named The Brown Dog in his honor.
